A probe has been launched into suspected methanol-laced liquor after eight people died in and around Pune within a span of 24 hours, PTI reported, citing officials on Friday. The deaths were reported from the Phugewadi area of Pimpri Chinchwad and Pune’s Hadapsar locality on Thursday, triggering concern among local authorities and the excise department.

According to the excise department, a bootlegger suspected of supplying country-made liquor to both affected areas has been detained. A case has been registered against him at Dapodi police station as investigations widen into the source of the suspected toxic alcohol.

State Excise Commissioner Atul Kanade confirmed that Yogesh Wankhede, who allegedly supplied liquor to Phugewadi and Hadapsar, has been taken into custody.

“We detained one Yogesh Wankhede, who had supplied liquor to both Phugewadi and Hadapsar. He has been handed over to the Pimpri Chinchwad police, and they are taking further action,” Kanade added.

Separately, three deaths were reported from Hadapsar. An official said the deceased had complained of abdominal pain before their deaths, and the exact cause is still being investigated along with the suspected poisonous liquor angle.
