Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday highlighted the strong bond between India and Israel, saying he receives “more followers from India than anywhere else” at a time when, according to him, Israel faces criticism and attempts at “delegitimisation” in several parts of the world.

Addressing an event, Netanyahu said, “We have a unique relationship with a huge power called India. In India, there's support for Israel. We face delegitimisation in much of the world - but not in India. In India, there is an absolutely crazy love for Israel, truly crazy. I think I have more followers from India than from anywhere else.”

Netanyahu’s remarks come months after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Israel, during which the two leaders shared warm public camaraderie and reaffirmed bilateral ties.

Earlier, during a joint press conference with PM Modi in February, Netanyahu had also recalled a personal anecdote linked to India and his wife Sara. “I have to say at the end of this visit that I owe India — I don’t know if I told you this, Narendra — but I owe India a great personal debt. You see, when I met Sara for the first time, I think our first or second date was in an Indian restaurant in Tel Aviv,” Netanyahu had said.

During the February visit, PM Modi was also conferred with Israel’s highest parliamentary honour, the “Speaker of the Knesset Medal”.
