There is a growing possibility that senior AIADMK leaders C Vijayabaskar and CV Shanmugam could quit the party, sources said Friday. The sources said that both leaders have begun separate rounds of consultations with their loyalists, fuelling rumours over their future political plans.

Former minister C Vijayabaskar is learnt to have been holding a series of meetings with his supporters in his native Pudukkottai district to assess the current political situation and seek feedback on his next course of action.

At the same time, senior AIADMK leader CV Shanmugam is also understood to be consulting his close aides and loyalists.

The reports have intensified speculation in political circles that both leaders are evaluating their options, including whether to remain in the AIADMK or consider a possible move to actor Vijay’s TVK.

Though there has been no official confirmation from either leader, the developments have triggered fresh buzz about their future move.

The AIADMK leadership has not yet responded to the reports.

The AIADMK’s internal crisis deepened after Vijay’s TVK emerged as the single largest party in the recently concluded Assembly elections. A faction led by senior leaders CV Shanmugam and SP Velumani openly extended support to the Vijay-led dispensation, triggering one of the most serious internal rebellions the party has faced in recent years.

The Shanmugam camp argued that supporting TVK was necessary to prevent any indirect understanding with the DMK and to protect the AIADMK’s political identity. CV Shanmugam publicly stated that the party was founded in opposition to the DMK and that many within the AIADMK strongly opposed suggestions of any arrangement involving the DMK.

The rebel faction also insisted that backing Vijay would give the AIADMK time to rebuild after its poor electoral performance. However, party chief Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) reportedly resisted unconditional support to TVK and tried to retain control over the organisation.

The crisis escalated further after multiple MLAs linked to the Shanmugam-Velumani camp resigned and joined TVK, intensifying fears of a wider split within the AIADMK.
