Bengaluru:With Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot officially accepting Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s resignation, the Congress in Karnataka has entered a crucial transition phase, one that could redefine the party’s political and caste equations ahead of the 2029 Assembly elections and the next Lok Sabha battle.
All indications now point towards Deputy Chief MinisterDK Shivakumartaking over as the next chief minister after months of intense speculation, internal negotiations and power balancing within the Karnataka Congress. While the leadership transition appears to have finally been settled, the real challenge for the party is only beginning - managing competing caste interests, accommodating senior leaders, and preparing a fresh cabinet that reflects generational change without triggering rebellion.
Alongside the chief ministerial change, attention has also shifted to the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president’s post, which Shivakumar currently holds. Sources indicate that senior Congress leader and Public Works Department Minister Satish Jarkiholi has emerged as the frontrunner for the organisational role. However, Jarkiholi is understood to have placed a key condition before the party leadership - he wants to retain a ministerial berth even if he is appointed KPCC chief.
Speculation is also growing over a possible cabinet reshuffle under Shivakumar’s leadership. Several senior ministers in Siddaramaiah’s cabinet may not return in the new dispensation if the Congress opts for a younger and more politically aggressive team. Among those whose future remains uncertain are Social Welfare Minister HC Mahadevappa, Energy Minister KJ George and Home Minister G Parameshwara - all influential leaders above the age of 70.
Party insiders, however, maintain that no final decision has yet been communicated and stress that experience will continue to play a major role in cabinet formation. Karnataka currently has 34 cabinet positions, including that of the chief minister. Three berths are already vacant following the resignations of KN Rajanna and B Nagendra and the death of minister D Sudhakar, giving the leadership some room for recalibration.
The expected reshuffle also aligns with Rahul Gandhi’s earlier push for generational transition within the Congress. Siddaramaiah had reportedly been advised to induct more legislators below the age of 50 into governance roles, and the same formula is likely to guide the next cabinet as well.
As Karnataka prepares for a new political chapter, the Congress leadership’s decisions over the next few days, from cabinet formation to the KPCC appointment, are expected to determine whether the transition strengthens the party or opens fresh fault lines within the ruling establishment.
