TheVillage of ManorhavenBoard of Trustees approved new sewer hookup fees, discussed parking changes near Sagamore Hill Drive and heard renewed resident concerns over large-scale development projects and fireworks during its Wednesday, May 27 meeting.

The board unanimously approved a local law establishing a sewer connection fee for new development projects.

Attorney Christopher Newman said under the measure, builders will pay a hookup fee based on projected sewage usage, calculated at $30 per gallon depending on the type and size of the development.

Newman said the fee applies only to new hookups and is intended to help offset costs associated with increased sewer use from new construction. Newman also said that the village may explore sewer rental fees in the future, though no such proposal is currently under consideration.

The board also approved a parking regulation change for Sagamore Hill Drive near Tom’s Point Lane and Matinecock Avenue. The amendment will allow limited parking on portions of the east side of the street while maintaining no-parking zones between driveways to improve traffic flow and emergency vehicle access.

Mayor John Popeleski said a traffic and fire access study was conducted using a large ladder truck and determined the revised parking layout would not create safety issues.

Discussion later turned to several ongoing development projects in the village, including proposals at Haven Marina, 30 Sagamore Hill Drive and the Typhon Steel property.

The board approved a $49,000 proposal from IMEG Consultants to provide third-party engineering review services related to the proposed development at 30 Sagamore Hill Drive.

Popeleski said the village now requires outside engineering review of major projects before plans move forward in the approval process.

Resident Christian Hommerich questioned the village’s current development review procedures, arguing that builders should secure water and sewer availability before demolition and construction begin.
