Three eighth grade students from Manhasset Middle School were recognized for their literary talents in the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association’s 40th annual Student Poetry Contest.

The students’ work was selected by a panel of judges from a pool of more than 1,600 entries.

Alexa Lin won second-place grand champion for her poem,“Weaving Through Rain.” Judges named her piece one of the top three poems in its category,praising its creativity,depth,originality and strength of voice.

Alexandra Corti and Serena Wang both earned honorable mention distinctions.

The students are taught by English teacher Lori Pellegrino.

“Your work stood out to our panel of judges and left a lasting impression,” the association said in a statement.

The students will be recognized at an awards ceremony at the Walt Whitman Birthplace Museum on May 31.
