Watching a well-directed clash during a play on one of the most hailed Hindu epics, the Mahabharat, is not surprising at all. However, watching a ‘real’ clash unfold during the play is something else entirely– which seemingly ended up happening inOdisha’s Ganjam. In a rather ‘ironic’ incident, clashes ended up erupting between the performers of two separate groups that were putting up the Mahabharat play during the Thakurani Yatra festivities at the Markandi village under the Golanthara police station limits. Theclashwas wild enough to leave 20 people injured, out of which, 10 were left critically injured.

The incident allegedly unfolded late at night, near the ODRP Colony area in Ganjam. According to sources, tensions erupted after a heated argument broke out among some youths present at the event. The verbal altercation soon escalated into a massive dispute.

Reportedly, eyewitnesses said both sides attacked each other using stones, sticks, and wooden rods, creating panic across the village. The festive atmosphere quickly turned chaotic as people ran for safety amid the violence. A video of the same also came forward, which looked equally chaotic. The clip showed young men attacking each other with whatever was available. Some were seen standing with strong baton-like sticks.

More than 20 people were reportedly injured in the incident. Among them, over 10 critically injured individuals were immediately shifted to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur for treatment.

The Odisha Police was quick to reach the spot soon after receiving information of the matter. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact reason behind the clash and identify those involved in triggering the violence.

The incident has created tensions in the area, while police continue questioning locals and gathering evidence related to the late-night violence.
