A boat carrying around 14 people capsized in the Ganga river near Umanath Ganga Ghat in Bihar’s Barh subdivision on Thursday, leaving at least two people dead while five others are still missing, officials said. According to police, strong winds are suspected to have caused the small vessel to overturn in the middle of the river. Several passengers were rescued by local residents and nearby boatmen before emergency teams reached the spot.

Barh SDPO Ramakrishna said authorities were alerted soon after the incident. “A small boat overturned due to strong winds. Fourteen people were on board. Seven people are reported safe, while two bodies have been recovered. Another five people are missing,” he said.

Eyewitnesses said panic broke out after the boat suddenly lost balance midstream. “There were approximately 14 to 15 people on the boat. Around seven people are feared drowned. Others were rescued using another boat. So far, it has not been confirmed how many people have drowned,” an eyewitness told news agency PTI.

The officer added that teams of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) were being rushed to the area to launch a search-and-rescue operation for the missing passengers.

Locals gathered along the riverbank as rescue efforts continued late into the day. Officials said further details were awaited.
