Tensions in the Middle East escalated again on Thursday after the United States carried outfresh strikeson an Iranian military site. Hours after the attack, Kuwait reported intercepting incoming missiles and drones. Notably, the strikes came hours after United States President Donald Trump said that Iran is "negotiating on fumes" and insisted that November’s midterm elections won’t make him rush into a deal to end the nearly three-month-old conflict that’s spurred unease across the global economy.Middle East TensionsLive Updates - CheckHere
Three explosions were reported east of Bandar Abbas early Thursday morning, according to Iran’s state-run Fars News Agency, which said air defence systems in the southern Iranian city were briefly activated following the blasts. Shortly afterwards, Reuters reported that the US military had carried out fresh strikes on an Iranian military site, citing an unnamed US official.
US forces carried out a strike on an Iranian military facility after downing Iranian attack drones, reported news agency AP, adding that the US forces also struck an Iranian ground control station in Bandar Abbas that was about to launch a fifth drone.
Meanwhile, Iran's Tasnim news agency said that the IRGC Navy confronted a US oil tanker attempting to transit through the Strait of Hormuz while they were switching off their radar system. According to the report, the IRGC Navy fired swiftly and decisively, forcing the US oil tanker to turn back.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it has struck an "American airbase" in response to the early morning attack by US, according to the semi-official Tasnim news agency. The IRGC said that an airbase, which it identified as the origin of the US "aggression" but did not say where it was located, was attacked at 4:50am local time (01:20 GMT).
The IRGC also said that any "aggression will not go unanswered," adding that further military actions will face a "more decisive" response.
Hours after the attack, the Kuwait's Army said its air defence systems were activated to counter hostile aerial threats, adding that explosions heard across the country were the result of successful interceptions. The source of the attacks was not immediately specified, and no one has claimed responsibility so far.
Kuwait repeatedly came under fire from Iran and Iranian-backed Shiite militias in Iraq during the war.
