Delhiites might finally be in for a much-needed respite from the heat and heatwave warnings that have been issued over the last few days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert for thunderstorms and rain inDelhi, signalling potential relief for residents from the prevailingheat. This alert comes as the city has been experiencing severe heatwave conditions, with maximum temperatures recorded between 45 and 46 degrees Celsius over recent days.

As per the IMD, Delhi will witness thunderstorms and light to moderate rainfall today, May 28. Wind speeds may reach up to 50 kilometres per hour. Reportedly, the city might witness very light to light rainfall during the afternoon, along with thundersquall with wind speed reaching 50-60kmph. The IMD has predicted the same for the evening. The alert urges residents to stay informed about changing weather conditions, particularly as similar alerts have been issued for neighbouring states.

Currently, temperatures in Delhi are notably high, with the Safdarjung weather station reporting a maximum of 44.3 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature is expected to hover around 26 degrees Celsius. While no significant temperature changes are anticipated in the immediate future, a decrease of 5 to 7 degrees Celsius is expected after May 29, providing some relief from the oppressive heat.

In addition to rainfall, thunderstorms are likely to affect various parts of the city, with the IMD indicating that these weather patterns may persist over the next few days. The alert serves as a reminder for residents to exercise caution, particularly during periods of intense weather activity, which can disrupt daily activities.

Looking ahead, the IMD has also reported a delay in the onset of the southwest monsoon, which is now expected to reach Kerala between May 28 and June 3. Consequently, the arrival of the monsoon in Delhi is projected around June 27. This shift could further influence local weather patterns and provide additional relief from the current heatwave conditions.
