Food safety and hygiene concerns yet again took over after a disgustingly disturbing video surfaced on social media fromMumbai’s Goregaon East area. Theclipshowed a hotel staff member casually spitting on ‘rotis’ while cooking them for customers. It was a 48-year-old man, Deepak Dattaram Pawar, who first spotted the heinous act. Surprised and in disbelief, the man first observed the staff member for a while, and only after being confirmed, he started recording the act. The alleged act was captured on a mobile phone video, following which the police detained the employee, along with launching an investigation.

The incident reportedly took place at the Fish Koliwada Hotel located in Santosh Nagar, Goregaon East. The complainant, Pawar, told police that on the night of May 23, 2026, he had stepped out for dinner as usual.

According to his statement, he first visited another restaurant nearby, but due to the heavy crowd there, he went to Fish Koliwada Hotel instead. While waiting inside the hotel, Pawar allegedly noticed the employee preparing ‘rotis’ and repeatedly spitting on them before placing them inside the furnace for cooking.

Reportedly, Pawar also showed the shocking video to local residents, who were naturally left shocked and irked. The locals then contacted the police control room on Monday night, May 25.

The police reached the hotel and detained the employee for questioning. During interrogation, the accused was identified as 53-year-old Kaushar Gaffar Sheikh, originally from Ballia district in Uttar Pradesh.

Police sources said the employee is accused of deliberately spitting on ‘Rotis’ before serving them to customers, an act that could pose serious health risks to the public.

The complaint also raises allegations against hotel owner Faiyyaz Ahmed Sheikh. Local residents have claimed that such unhygienic practices may have been going on despite management being aware of the situation. Residents have demanded strict action, calling it a serious threat to public health and food safety.

The police have now started a formal investigation into the matter and are also verifying the authenticity of the viral video as part of the probe.
