India's largest and most dominant automobile manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki has adopted ways to reduce the use of petroleum and also cut foreign currency spending. This move is significant as it comes in the midst of rising fuel prices as well as after Prime Minister, Narendra Modi urged citizens on economic caution and reducing fuel consumption.

Maruti Suzuki has asked employees to work from home when possible and encouraged ways for employees to car pool and use public transport as well. Maruti Suzuki has stated, " Maruti Suzuki has placed immense importance in the Hon'ble Prime Minister's clarion call for austerity as well as the need to mitigate the long-term impact of the West Asia war. The Company strongly feels whether it is during a crisis or business as usual, management should conduct business in the most productive and efficient manner, minimising the use of petroleum products and foreign currency expenditure." The company has also publicly stated that, "this is a timely opportunity to revisit and re-examine all our processes and make efforts to improve efficiency across all our business operations, whether it is for national objectives or our own health of business."

Maruti Suzuki India has over 40,000 employees, over 3,300 sales outlets and nearly 6,000 service touchpoints in the country. The move impacts employees across corporate offices, R&D facilities and manufacturing plants.

Maruti Suzuki has become the first automaker in the country to declare such fuel-saving steps in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal. These measures aim to offset the economic impact of the West Asia war and involve extensive work-from-home mandates, carpooling initiatives, as well as a strict ban on non-critical foreign travel altogether.

At a time when the world is facing geopolitical and economic uncertainty as well as volatile crude oil rates, this message from Maruti's management is significant as it is not only redefining systems and processes but also encouraging all to adapt to a new way of working as well as boosting fuel efficiency in the entire ecosystem.
