Jeonbuk National University has reopened an art hall following extensive renovation work, transforming it into a safer and more comfortable space for culture and the arts, the school said Tuesday.

Yang O-bong, president of the university, held a reopening ceremony in the lobby of the Geon Ji Art Hall, a small theater at Jeonbuk National University's Samsung Art Center in Jeonju, North Jeolla Province, on Friday.

The university said the renovation project was made possible through an 8 billion won donation from Kim Jeong-ok, chairperson of the Kim Hee-kyung Scholarship Foundation for European Humanities.

The school noted that 6 billion won was invested in renovating the art hall as well as the Youngsan Hall, the main theater of the Samsung Art Center.

“Geon Ji Art Hall was reborn thanks to Chairperson Kim’s valuable vision and dedication,” Yang said, “I hope the (reopened) art hall will become an open venue where members of our university as well as local residents can come together to enjoy culture and the arts.”

Kim, senior school officials, professors and administrators of the university’s College of Arts attended the reopening ceremony.

The aging art hall underwent a major renovation nearly three decades after opening in 1998. It has long been recognized as a cultural venue for local residents.

The university said the hall has adopted a more modern look through the repainting of its exterior and the renovation of the entrance area. The lobby was upgraded with porcelain tiles, tambour board finishes and a new information desk to improve visitor convenience.
