Amid growing speculation over a possible leadership change in Karnataka, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar is scheduled to attend a key breakfast meeting on May 28 called byChief Minister Siddaramaiahat the CM’s Kaveri residence on Thursday at 9 am - a meeting that could shape the next political chapter in the Congress-ruled state.
The high-stakes interaction comes just a day after marathon discussions in Delhi involving the Congress high command, where the Karnataka leadership issue is understood to have dominated conversations. Sources indicate that the party leadership may soon take a final call on whether Siddaramaiah should continue as chief minister or pave the way for a transition.
According to sources familiar with the discussions, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi conveyed a direct message to Siddaramaiah during the Delhi meetings: “You must give the next person a chance.” The remark has intensified speculation that the Congress could be preparing for a leadership reshuffle in Karnataka.
Sources further said Siddaramaiah conveyed that he would abide by the party’s decision, but requested “one or two days” before taking any final step. While there has been no official announcement yet, political circles in Bengaluru are closely watching for signals emerging from the Siddaramaiah-Shivakumar meeting.
The Congress leadership is also believed to be working on a possible transition formula to avoid factional fallout in the state unit. Sources claimed Siddaramaiah was offered a role in the Congress Working Committee as part of broader discussions around a possible change in leadership. However, the veteran leader reportedly declined the offer, indicating that he is not keen on shifting to Delhi politics at this stage.
The developments have once again brought focus back on the long-discussed power-sharing arrangement between Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar - an understanding that has been the subject of speculation ever since the Congress swept the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections.
While the Congress has repeatedly denied any immediate plans for a change in leadership, the renewed round of closed-door meetings and political messaging from Delhi has reignited questions over whether Karnataka is heading towards a change of guard in the coming days.
