The Supreme Court of the United States of America has declined to hear Meta Platforms' plea to avoid lawsuits brought by Vermont's attorney general, accusing the company of designing Instagram, photo-sharing applications, in a way that is addictive to young users. This comes at a time when big tech is already facing legal risks related to child safety.

The justices turned their face away from Meta's appeal of a lower court's ruling that let the lawsuit proceed, rejecting the firm's argument that courts in Vermont had jurisdiction over the dispute.

Meta said that the state did not allege that it designed the Instagram app or its features in Vermont, or that any of the alleged misrepresentations about Instagram's safety or addictiveness were developed in Vermont. In the past, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg testified and denied that Instagram targeted kids in a youth social media addiction trial in California.

Even The Pope Is Worried About AI And Big Tech

Vermont's Democratic Attorney General Charity Clark sued Meta in 2023 in state court under the state's consumer protection law, claiming that Instagram has even studied teens' neurological. cognitive and psychological vulnerabilities to cause them to use the app compulsively, affecting their mental health in a negative manner.

The lawsuit was a part of a coordinated effort involving 42 state attorneys general filing enforcement actions in both state and federal courts in the country. Meta has been constantly saying that letting the case continue in Vermont is unfair, and it is also violating the right to due process under the US Constitution's 14th amendment. Vermont Supreme Court has said, 'A company that reaches out and purposefully avails itself of a forum state's market for its own economic gain can expect to be haled into court in that jurisdiction to account for its conduct related to those business activities.'
