Residents of Syosset gathered Monday morning for the annual Syosset Memorial Day Parade, marching through rainy weather to honor veterans and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving the country.

Theparadebegan at 10 a.m. as rain fell across the community, but the weather did not stop residents, organizations and local groups from taking part in the annual tradition. Community members lined the streets, holding American flags and watching the marchers make their way through town despite the conditions.

Groups from across the community participated in the parade, including the marching band, Little League teams, Girl Scout troops, local organizations and community leaders. Families gathered outside homes and along sidewalks as the parade walked through the streets while spectators waved and cheered them on.

Russell Green, president of the Chamber of Commerce, said the organization was proud to participate and support veterans regardless of the weather.

“The Chamber of Commerce supports veterans no matter what,” Green said. “It doesn’t matter if it’s raining.”

Members of the Chamber marched together through the rain during the early part of the parade while residents gathered along the street to watch.

Melesia DeChiaro, secretary of the Chamber, said Memorial Day is an important opportunity for people to honor veterans and remember those who lost their lives serving the country.

“It means a lot to support the veterans and the people who lost their lives,” DeChiaro said.

Throughout the parade, many groups reflected on the meaning behind Memorial Day and the importance of remembering those who died while serving in the military. Several groups carried American flags, while others marched behind banners representing local organizations and community programs.

Girl Scout troops also joined the parade, honoring those who lost their lives for the country. Young children marched alongside adults as residents watched from the sidewalks.
