The tragic death of wellness coach Kristian Trend after participating in a so-called “toad detox” ritual has sparked global concern over dangerous alternative healing practices being promoted online. Trend, who had previously survived Burkitt lymphoma, a rare and aggressive blood cancer, reportedly turned to holistic wellness therapies in pursuit of better health.

However, experts say the unregulated ritual he underwent may have exposed him to highly toxic biological substances capable of causing life-threatening complications.

The practice, commonly known as a “toad vaccine” or Kambo ceremony, involves applying secretions from poisonous frogs or toads onto intentionally burned skin. Advocates claim the ritual can “cleanse toxins,” improve energy, sharpen mental clarity, and deliver emotional healing. But medical professionals strongly reject these claims, warning that the procedure can trigger severe cardiovascular, neurological, and gastrointestinal emergencies.

According to research published in Frontiers in Pharmacology, Kambo rituals typically use secretions from the Phyllomedusa bicolor giant monkey frog found in the Amazon rainforest. During the ceremony, practitioners create small burns on the participant’s skin before applying the frog secretion directly into the wounds.

The toxins rapidly enter the bloodstream, often producing intense physical reactions within minutes. Participants commonly experience violent vomiting, sweating, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, and altered mental states. While supporters describe these effects as “purging” or “detoxification,” doctors say the body is actually responding to toxic exposure.

Medical experts stress that there is currently no strong scientific evidence proving that Kambo rituals provide any long-term health benefits.

Doctors say marketing toxic exposures as “detox” therapies is medically misleading and potentially deadly.

According to experts, the human body already possesses sophisticated detoxification systems through the liver, kidneys, lungs, and digestive tract. Introducing poisonous compounds into the body does not enhance these systems and may instead overwhelm them.
