Afghanistan have named their squad for the upcoming tour of India, which will start on June 6 and see them play a one-off Test match and three ODIs. The rising Asian giants will be led by Hasmantullah Shahidi in both formats, but the big news is that Rashid Khan will not play the red-ball clash. However, the star spinner will return for the ODI series.
While the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has not officially said it, it is believed that Rashid has been rested. The Afghanistan cricket legend has skipped several Test matches in recent times to manage his workload.
In April this year, Rashid had indicated that he would not play Test cricket in the future due to advice from his doctor.
"Red-ball cricket is a little difficult because that was the first thing my doctor told me — ‘stay away from red-ball cricket. I still went ahead and played. After the surgery, I played a game against Zimbabwe and bowled 67 overs, which was crazy. The doctor told me, ‘if you don’t want to play cricket, you can keep playing red-ball cricket’. He said it’s not going to help me and that I won’t be able to play for long. I still went ahead and played, but when he found out I had bowled 67 overs across two innings, he was shocked. He said, ‘you can’t do that to yourself," said Rashid in a press conference during the 2026 IPL.
Meanwhile, Rahmanullah Zadaran has been included in the Test squad and could make his debut. He is yet to play any format in international cricket. Interestingly, Mujeeb Ur Rehman has also been left out of the side in both formats.
India named their squad last week, with Jasprit Bumrah rested from both formats and four uncapped players included in the Test team. Three players who are yet to make their debut for the national team are also part of the ODI series.
The one-off test match will take place from June 6 at New Chandigarh. The three ODIs will take place on June 13, 17, and 20 in Dharamshala, Lucknow, and Chennai, respectively.
The series is a historic one, as the two countries will play a bilateral ODI series for the first time. Meanwhile, this will only be the second time they play each other in a Test match, with the only instance so far being in 2018.
