A shooting near the White House on Saturday evening ended with two people being shot after Secret Service officers confronted a man who hadopened firenear one of the most heavily guarded buildings in the world. The incident took place at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and 17th Street Northwest, just outside the White House complex.
According to a law enforcement official who spoke to CNN, uniformed Secret Service officers were responding to a report of a person firing a weapon when the encounter took place. Fox News reported that the suspect was shot by Secret Service, and that a bystander was also struck during the incident.
The suspect has died and the bystander is in serious condition. Both were taken to a hospital. No Secret Service agents were injured. The suspect was reportedly 21 years old.
ABC News chief White House correspondent Selina Wang was in the middle of recording a video on her phone when the shooting began. "It sounded like dozens of gunshots," she wrote on X shortly after. "We were told to sprint to the press briefing room where we are holding now." Her video, which captured the moment the shots rang out as she ducked for cover, was widely shared online.
Armed Secret Service agents were subsequently seen moving across the North Lawn and securing the area around the press briefing room.
The lockdown on the White House complex was lifted just after 6:45 p.m. ET. President Donald Trump was reported to be inside the White House residence at the time of the shooting.
