One person has died and two are in a critical condition after a man 'stabbed multiple people' and fled the scene, according to police.

The incident took place in the morning of Tuesday, February 17 in Sydney,Australia.

According toNew South Wales Policea manstabbedmulitple people in Merrylands, an area in the city's west, at around 10am.

Emergency services including police attended the scene on Merrylands Road.

Officers were told on arrival that "a man stabbed multiple people before leaving the area on foot".

NSW Ambulance paramedics attended and treated three people for serious injuries. One person died at the scene and two others have been taken to hospital in a critical condition.

Police have said that the deceased is yet to be formally identified.

A crime scene is in place and an investigation in to the incident has commenced.
