A 10-year-old girl, who had been missing since Thursday evening (May 21), was found dead with injuries near Kannampalayam lake in Tamil Nadu's Coimbatore. According to reports, the police have arrested two accused, who allegedly kidnapped the girl while she was playing and later killed her. The victim's family members are demanding justice and have sought strict punishment for the accused.
Her uncle, Palanisamy, told ANI that on Thursday night, they got to know that the girl was missing. After receiving information, they got to know that the girl had allegedly been kidnapped and that two people, identified as Mohan and Karthick, had been arrested.
"I was told that the girl went missing two days ago in the evening, after she had returned from a nearby shop. We still do not know what happened, and now we cannot even see the body of our child. Police told us that the inquiry is underway," he added.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay reacted to the horrific incident, saying that it has shocked him. Calling it "inhuman and unforgivable criminal acts", he said that it can never be tolerated in our society.
"I share my deepest condolences with the relatives of the family of the little girl who is grieving the loss of their dear child. Two culprits related to this case have been arrested. I have directed the police to conduct a thorough and expeditious investigation into the incident and to take all necessary actions to file the chargesheet immediately," he wrote in his post on X.
"The Tamil Nadu government will firmly act to ensure that those who engage in such heinous acts against women and children receive severe punishment under the law. All immediate and necessary actions for this will be taken," CM Vijay added.
Hundreds of students and members of the public staged a protest seeking justice. However, police pushed them away from the spot, and the parents were taken to the Sulur police station for a compromise.
"We told them not to sign any papers and not to receive anything. We want justice and want to see what punishment is given to these accused individuals," the girl's relative told ANI news agency. Sulur police registered a case and sent the body to the Government Hospital for post-mortem examination. Police suspect that the child may have been strangled to death.
