Hamza Burhan, alleged to be among the key conspirators behind the 2019 Pulwama terror attack that claimed the lives of over 40 CRPF personnel, was reportedly shot dead by unidentified assailants in Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) on Thursday.

On Friday, several Pakistan-based wanted terrorists, including Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin and Al-Badr leader Bakht Zameen Khan, attended Burhan’s funeral prayers in Islamabad. Apart from senior terror operatives, officials linked to Pakistan's ISI were also seen at the funeral gathering.

Heavy security arrangements were visible surrounding the gathering, particularly around Al-Badr chief Bakht Zameen Khan. Heavily armed terrorists carrying AK-47 rifles and other sophisticated weapons were also deployed during the ceremony.

According to sources, the presence of security around the terrorist leaders reflected fears of possible attacks by unknown assailants. The fears came amid reports of targeted killings of terrorists in Pakistan and PoK.

Commander of the Al Badr terror group, Burhan was designated as a terrorist by India in April 2022 for his involvement in a series of terror acts in Jammu and Kashmir.

The slain terrorist was a resident of Ratnipora in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district, however, he later crossed over to Pakistan and joined the Al-Badr terror outfit. He played key role in radicalising youth, recruiting operatives and financing Al-Badr's activities from Pakistan.

Since last few years, Burhan was living undercover in the PoK and was working as the principal of a private college in Muzaffarabad. He was attacked by unknown gunmen, who opened fire at close range, hitting him multiple times in the head, on Thursday morning when he stepped out of the college premises.
