Large parts of India continued to reel under an intense heatwave on Friday, with temperatures nearing 48 degrees Celsius in several regions as authorities issued health warnings over prolonged exposure to extreme heat.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are likely to continue across northwest, central, eastern and parts of peninsular India till May 28. Officials warned that rising daytime temperatures along with unusually warm nights are increasing heat stress levels, especially in crowded cities and areas where people work outdoors.

Meteorologists said the lack of cooling during the night is worsening the impact of the ongoing heatwave and increasing health risks for children, elderly people and those with medical conditions.

According to the IMD, severe heatwave conditions are likely over parts of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh between May 22 and May 28.

The weather office also warned that Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi are likely to witness heatwave conditions over the next few days, with severe heatwave spells expected between May 24 and May 27.

Rajasthan is also expected to continue facing intense heat, particularly in western parts of the state where severe heatwave conditions may persist till May 28.

Several other states, including Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, are also likely to experience heatwave conditions over the coming days.

Amid the extreme weather, a major power outage was reported in Gurgaon on Friday night after a fault at a 220kV substation in Sector 72 disrupted electricity supply in several areas.

The blackout also affected the Rapid Metro service, leaving commuters stranded. Videos from the spot showed several passengers walking along metro tracks to reach nearby stations. Authorities have advised people to avoid stepping out during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated and take precautions against heat-related illnesses as temperatures remain dangerously high across the country.
