A massive power cut hit Gurugram in the late hours of May 22 (Friday) after the main transformer at the 220 KVA power station in Sector 72 caught fire. The blaze disrupted electricity supply across several parts of the city, according to a Times of India report. After the fire at the transformer, seven power substations were affected, leading to a major power cut across Gurugram.
“A power outage occurred in Gurugram after a fire broke out in the main transformer at the 220 KVA power station in Sector-72, causing electricity disruption in multiple areas of the city,” Sandeep Chugh, PRO of Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN), Gurugram, told TOI.
As the blaze erupted in the transformer, Gurugram's Rapid Metro services were also disrupted for around an hour, with passengers stranded at the station and inside the metro coaches.
After the metro train broke down on the tracks, passengers were evacuated from the metro coaches. Thousands of commuters faced delays and inconvenience due to the disruption.
According to the officials quoted by India Today, repair work is underway on the damaged transformer; however, restoring the power system could take between eight and 10 hours.
Earlier on Wednesday night, a major fire at a Sector 9 substation led to an overnight power outage in three residential societies, affecting nearly 1,500 families.
Power supply was disrupted in Parina Laxmi Apartment, Parina Coban Society in Sector 99A and BPTP Amstoria in Sector 102. The worst hit was Parina Laxmi in Sector 99A, where around 650 families were left without any backup as the society lacks generator facilities. Later, the power supply was restored after nine hours.
