Tulsi Gabbard isstepping downas President Donald Trump’s Director of National Intelligence after revealing that her husband, Abraham Williams, has been diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer. Gabbard said she would resign effective June 30, 2026, in order to support her husband through treatment.
Gabbard posted her resignation letter on X, in which she stated,
"I must submit my resignation, effective June 30, 2026. My husband, Abraham, has recently been diagnosed with an extremely rare form of bone cancer. He faces major challenges in the coming weeks and months. At this time, I must step away from public service to be by his side and fully support him through this battle.
Abraham has been my rock throughout our eleven years of marriage — standing steadfast through my deployment to East Africa on a Joint Special Operations mission, multiple political campaigns, and now my service in this role. His strength and love have sustained me through every challenge. I cannot in good conscience ask him to face this fight alone while I continue in this demanding and time-consuming position."
Gabbard's resignation comes just months after her deputy, Joe Kent, resigned in protest of Iran War, saying Iran posed “no imminent threat” to the US Before joining the Trump administration, Gabbard herself was outspoken against war with Iran and frequently warned against another Middle East conflict.
Abraham Williams is a cinematographer, camera operator and editor who has frequently collaborated with Gabbard on political and documentary projects. Born in New Zealand and raised in Hawaii, Williams has largely stayed out of the political spotlight despite his wife’s high-profile career.
The couple married in 2015 in a traditional Vedic ceremony in Hawaii after meeting during Gabbard’s congressional campaign. Over the years, Williams has appeared alongside Gabbard at campaign events and in social media videos, often helping produce digital content tied to her political work.
While Gabbard became a national political figure through her time in Congress, presidential campaign and later role in the Trump administration, Williams maintained a quieter public profile focused on filmmaking and production work.
Neither Gabbard nor Williams has publicly shared additional details about the diagnosis or treatment plan.
