Students and staff at Manhasset’s Shelter Rock Elementary School gathered on Friday, May 15, for a historic Time Capsule Celebration, bridging a half-century of school history and community pride by preparing a message for the future.
The celebration gave students a unique window into the past as they examined historical artifacts from a time capsule originally buried on school grounds in 1976. Students had the opportunity to view a variety of items from that era, including vintage clothing and historical school documents, offering a tangible glimpse into what daily life looked like at Shelter Rock 50 years ago.
The day’s celebration was heightened by a moving musical performance from the Shelter Rock sixth grade choir and orchestra, which set a beautiful, celebratory tone for the gathered crowd.
The event also featured a meaningful full-circle moment as the school welcomed back guest of honor Andre Tita. Mr. Tita was a student at the school in 1976 when the original capsule was placed in the ground, providing current students with a personal connection to the school’s enduring legacy.
The focus of the day centered on the students as they actively assembled a new time capsule. Reflecting on their own experiences, the students carefully curated and packed items that represent modern school culture, current student achievements and daily life in 2026. This hands-on project allowed the student body to directly decide how their era will be remembered by future generations.
The newly assembled time capsule has been officially sealed and buried, designated to remain untouched for another 50 years until its scheduled opening in 2076.
