Mark Zuckerberg-owned social media company Meta is facing a new legal trouble in the US. According to reports, WhatsApp, one of the world’s most popular instant messaging apps, has been accused of misleading users about how private and secure their messages really are.

As per Reuters, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has sued Meta and WhatsApp, accusing them of giving users a false impression about the app’s encryption and privacy protections.

"WhatsApp markets its services as secure and encrypted, but it does not deliver on those promises," Paxton was quoted as saying.

According to the lawsuit, WhatsApp claimed that user messages are fully protected with end-to-end encryption, while Meta allegedly had access to large amounts of private communication data.

The case says the company promised strong privacy to billions of users but failed to fully deliver on those promises. The lawsuit also mentions reports and whistleblower claims suggesting Meta had access to some unencrypted WhatsApp messages.

The social media giant has denied all allegations. Company spokesperson Andy Stone said WhatsApp cannot read or access users’ encrypted messages and called the lawsuit false.

The case adds to growing global pressure on Big Tech companies over privacy and user data. For years, WhatsApp has built its image around privacy, especially in countries like India where millions use the app daily for personal chats, business and payments.

But lawsuits like this are again raising questions about how much data tech companies really collect behind the scenes.

Texas is asking the court to stop Meta and WhatsApp from accessing users’ messages without consent. The state is also seeking financial penalties. This is not the first time major tech companies have faced such allegations. Texas previously sued Google over user privacy practices.
