Security agencies and the Railway Protection Force have launched an investigation after CCTV footage allegedly showed a suspect throwing an object near the cab road area of Howrah Station shortly before a fire and smoke scare involving the Mithila Express. Officials said the incident took place on Tuesday and was discovered during the investigation into a fire reported inside one of the train coaches stationed at the platform.
Authorities suspect the act may have been a deliberate attempt to create panic and disrupt railway operations. Security agencies are also examining whether the incident was linked to a larger sabotage plan aimed at triggering chaos or a stampede-like situation among passengers. According to officials, CCTV footage captured a person allegedly throwing an object near the station area before smoke was noticed inside the LS Second Class unreserved coach of the Mithila Express.
During the probe, investigators recovered a half-burnt cloth allegedly soaked in petrol from the coach. Smoke was detected near the bathroom area, following which railway staff quickly used fire extinguishers to control the situation. The Railway Ministry said prompt action by railway staff helped prevent a major disaster.
In a statement, the ministry said, “Following a report of a fire in a coach of the Mithila Express while it was stationed at Howrah, an investigation was conducted which led to the recovery of a half-burnt piece of cloth soaked in petrol.”
It further said, “Railway staff demonstrated promptness and brought the situation under immediate control, thereby averting a major disaster.”
Officials added that preliminary findings suggest “anti-social elements” may have been trying to threaten passenger safety and spread fear within the railway network. The RPF and other security agencies are now working to identify the suspect seen in the CCTV footage and investigate whether more people were involved in the incident.
Meanwhile, high alert protocols have been activated at major railway stations across the country as authorities continue the investigation.
