Gilbert “Gibby” A. Smith of Riverhead died May 20, 2026. He was 90 years old.
Born Nov. 13, 1935 in Calverton, he was the son of Charles and Viola (Carter) Smith. He graduated from Riverhead High School in 1953.
Smith worked as a farmer in Calverton. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead.
He enjoyed the outdoors, snowmobiling, modified car racing and cheering for the New York Giants and New York Rangers.
He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy, in 2013, as well as his siblings Doris, Herbert and Douglas.
He is survived by his son, Skip Smith (Paula) of Riverhead; his brother, Richard Smith of Delancey, N.Y.; and by two grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Monday, May 25, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will take place Tuesday, May 26, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church. Interment will follow at St. John’s Cemetery.
