A suspect and one victim have died and four other people were taken to hospital following a shooting during a hockey game in Pawtucket on Monday afternoon, officials told local media outlets. The incident occurred at the Dennis M. Lynch Arena, an indoor ice skating rink on Andrew D. Ferland Way. A 2pm game between Coventry Public Schools and Blackstone Valley Schools had been scheduled at the time.
Officials said the deceased suspect was a man, who has not yet been identified. As of 4 pm, the condition of the four people taken to hospital was not known. A student leaving the rink told 12 News he heard several "bangs" before people began running towards the exits as they realised the sounds were gunshots.
Video shared on social mediashowed police vehicles and ambulances lining streets around the arena, with emergency lights flashing as first responders secured the scene.
An employee at a nearby Walgreens said people entered the store in a panic, saying there had been a shooting. The employee said staff called 911 and closed the shop.
The shooting prompted a large police response, with law enforcement vehicles surrounding the arena. Shortly afterwards, a large group of hockey players were seen outside the building, some still in their socks after removing their skates, before being taken away from the scene.
Dan McKee said he was aware of the situation and was monitoring developments. In an email to families, Coventry Superintendent Don Cowart said officials were aware of a "serious reported incident" at the arena. "Information is still developing, and we are actively working with event staff and local authorities to understand the situation," he wrote. "We have been informed that students are secured in multiple locations," he continued. "At this time, we are still working the status and location of all individuals."
Cowart said he would provide a further update "as soon as we have verified details."
Providence Police Department said officers were on scene and that it was "monitoring the situation in Pawtucket."
