The United States is prepared to sell as much energy to India as the country is willing to buy, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Thursday, ahead of his first official visit to New Delhi.Speaking to reporters in Miami, Rubio described India as a “great partner” and said expanding energy cooperation would be a key focus during his trip.

“We want to sell them as much energy as they’ll buy. And obviously, you’ve seen I think we’re at historic levels of US production, and US export,” Rubio said.

He added that the US was already in discussions with India to increase energy trade and hoped to make it a bigger part of India’s energy portfolio. Rubio also mentioned potential opportunities involving Venezuelan oil. The comments come as India, one of the world’s largest energy importers, continues to face higher costs due to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz caused by the ongoing US-Iran conflict.

Rubio is scheduled to visit India from May 23 to 26, with stops in Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur, and New Delhi.

The visit will include a Quad foreign ministers’ meeting in New Delhi on May 26, which Rubio will attend alongside Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Japanese Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu. India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will host the meeting.Rubio noted the importance of the Quad grouping and said it would be his second Quad meeting as Secretary of State.

“They are a great ally, a great partner. We do a lot of good work with them. And so it is an important trip,” he said.

He also mentioned that Venezuela’s acting President Delcy Rodriguez is expected to visit India next week, creating additional opportunities for coordination.

Rubio’s stop in Kolkata will mark the first visit by a US Secretary of State to the city in nearly 14 years. The last such visit was by Hillary Clinton in 2012.The US Consulate General in Kolkata is America’s second-oldest consulate in the world, dating back to 1792 when President George Washington appointed Benjamin Joy as the first American Consul there. Rubio’s visit comes at a time of strong bilateral ties between the US and India, with both countries looking to deepen cooperation in energy, defence, technology, and strategic partnerships through platforms like the Quad.
