Republicans are showing growing frustration with President Donald Trump’s handling of the economy, but they continue to largely stand by him as the war with Iran drags on, according to a new AP-NORC poll. About 6 in 10 Republicans approve of how Trump is managing the economy. That’s down from nearly 8 in 10 in February, before the conflict with Iran began. Trump’s overall approval rating stands at 37%, a slight increase from 33% in April. However, he remains deeply unpopular outside his base. Nearly all Democrats disapprove of his performance, along with about 7 in 10 independents.

Only about one-third of allU.S.adults approve of Trump’s handling of the economy. That number is roughly in line with late April but lower than at the start of his second term, when 40% approved.The war with Iran has contributed to higher gasoline prices, adding to economic pressures. Many Republicans still back Trump’s overall approach, but dissatisfaction is rising .One Republican voter in Wisconsin told the AP he’s now helping his teenage son pay for gas due to the price spikes linked to the Iran conflict.

Immigration is emerging again as one of Trump’s stronger issues. About 45% of U.S. adults approve of how he is handling it — up from earlier this year.Among Republicans, support on immigration remains high at around 8 in 10.

Iran and Foreign Policy Drag on Approval

Trump’s approach to the war with Iran continues to be unpopular with the broader public. Only about one-third of Americans approve of his handling of the conflict.Similarly, roughly one-third approve of his overall foreign policy.A 22-year-old Republican-leaning independent in Georgia told the AP she does not support Trump on Iran, saying the costs outweigh the benefits at this point.

The AP-NORC poll was conducted May 14–18 among 1,117 adults. The margin of sampling error for all adults is plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.The findings come as Trump continues to navigate the Iran conflict while facing questions about its impact on everyday Americans, particularly through higher energy prices.
