Billionaire California gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer ripped into Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg over his company’s campaign contributions to challenger Xavier Becerra — issuing a warning to the tech titan as ahead of the election.
Steyer posted a screenshot of campaign filingson Xshowing a $950,000 donation from Zuckerberg’s Meta Platforms, Inc. to an Oakland-based group supporting Becerra’s bid for governor.
“5 p.m. today: Meta gives $950K for @XavierBecerra. 4 a.m. tomorrow: Meta lays off 10% of workforce,” Steyer wrote on Tuesday, referencingthe sweeping layoffsslamming the tech giant’s workforce.
“Mark Zuckerberg wants a friend in Sacramento. I won’t be.”
Steyer’s post came as Meta planned to lay off nearly 8,000 people — or more than 10% of its staff — as a disruptive shift toward artificial intelligence continues to roil the company.

The bloodbath, which includes 500 workers from the Bay area, is among the largest in the social media giant’s history.
Meanwhile, Democrats Becerra and Steyer have been battling for the top spot in in recent polling, with Becerra seeing 21% support and Steyer trailing at 15%, according to a poll released Tuesday by the state Democratic Party.
The contribution cited by Steyer was made to Working Families for Healthy Communities Supporting Becerra for Governor 2026.
