A high-stakes by-election which could determine the future of beleagueredPrime Minister Keir Starmerand the UK’s next leader will be held on June 18, the local council announced Wednesday.

“The poll will take place on Thursday, 18th June 2026,” Wigan Council said in a notice after the standing MP resigned to make way for Labour stalwart Andy Burnham.

Burnham, who has already been out campaigning in the Makerfield constituency, is seeking to defeat the far-right Reform UK party to win a place in parliament and then oust Starmer by triggering a Labour leadership contest.
