The Indian National Congress is set to become part of theTamil Nadu governmentafter a gap of nearly six decades, with two of its MLAs set to be inducted into Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay’s cabinet on Thursday (May 21). The announcement was made by Congress general secretary KC Venugopal, who said party president Mallikarjun Kharge had approved the induction of MLAs Rajesh Kumar and P Vishwanathan into the state cabinet.

“INC President Sh Mallikarjun Kharge ji has approved the induction of INC MLAs Adv. Rajesh Kumar and Thiru P Vishwanathan into the Tamil Nadu cabinet led by CM Thiru Vijay, and they will be taking oath as Ministers tomorrow,” Venugopal said in a post on X.

Calling it a landmark moment for the party, he added, “This is a historic occasion for us, as the Congress joins the Tamil Nadu cabinet after a long gap of 59 years!”

Venugopal also expressed confidence that the two leaders would work toward fulfilling the welfare and governance vision outlined by the Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi.

The Congress currently has five MLAs in the Tamil Nadu Assembly following the recently concluded elections, where it contested as part of a pre-poll alliance with the DMK. After Vijay’s TVK fell short of the majority mark in the 234-member Assembly, the Congress extended support to help the actor-turned-politician form the government in the state.

Vijay was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on May 10 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai, along with nine ministers of the new TVK-led government.

The swearing-in marked a major political shift in the state, with TVK becoming the first non-Dravidian party to form a government in Tamil Nadu, ending decades of dominance by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
