Utah state Representative Walt Brooks (R) has introduced legislation that would ban open carry on public college campuses across the state, in what amounts to a direct assault on Second Amendment rights by someone who should know better.
Brooks is attempting to sell this gun grab as some kind of "compromise" by offering concealed carry without a permit as a consolation prize. But here's the problem, patriots – the Constitution doesn't say we need permits to exercise our God-given rights, and it certainly doesn't say politicians get to pick and choose which parts of the Second Amendment apply where.
This is exactly the kind of weak-kneed, Democrat-lite thinking that has infected too many Republican politicians. Instead of standing firm on constitutional principles, Brooks is caving to the gun-grabbing crowd and their hysteria about law-abiding citizens exercising their rights.
College campuses have become some of the most dangerous places in America, with rising crime rates and radical leftist violence targeting conservative students. The last thing we need is to disarm the good guys and leave innocent students defenseless against criminals who – newsflash – don't follow gun laws anyway.
President Trump has made it clear that his administration stands firmly behind the Second Amendment, and we're seeing constitutional carry laws sweep across red states nationwide. So why is a supposedly conservative Utah lawmaker moving in the opposite direction?
Utah voters didn't send Republicans to Salt Lake City to water down their constitutional rights. They sent them there to protect and expand freedom, not negotiate it away piece by piece.
Brooks needs to withdraw this anti-gun legislation immediately, or Utah conservatives need to find someone who will actually fight for their rights instead of bargaining them away. The Second Amendment isn't a suggestion – it's the supreme law of the land.
