Washington, DC:President Trump told The Post on Monday that anyone responsible for kidnappingNancy Guthriemust return her unharmed, warning they would face the “most severe” federal penalties. In a brief phone interview, Trump added that he would direct the Justice Department to pursue the death penalty if the 84-year-old mother of NBC Today show host Savannah Guthrie is harmed or killed.
The president warned that Nancy Guthrie’s abductors would face “very, very severe, the most severe” federal consequences if she is found dead following her February 1 disappearance from her Tucson home. When asked whether that meant the Justice Department would seek the death penalty, Trump confirmed: “The most, yeah — that’s true.”
Federal charges are often pursued in high-profile cases, especially when an interstate element is involved or a federal law has been broken. While Arizona allows the death penalty, many of the 109 inmates currently on the state’s death row have been awaiting execution for decades.
Since 2022, Arizona has carried out only two executions, partly due to a nearly two-year pause imposed by the Democrat-led state government, which was lifted in late 2024.
Sheriff Nanos emphasised that while “nobody” has been ruled out, the public should refrain from spreading “nasty stuff” without evidence.
“If he [Tommaso Cioni] is guilty, if he’s the one who did it, and we’re able to prove that, then at that time jump on it, but don’t come out of nowhere with this,” Sheriff Nanos told the Daily Mail on Sunday.
