Maya Hawke, 27, got married on Valentine's Day. The groom was Christian Lee Hutson, 35, a folk singer-songwriter from Missouri who has been writing songs with Hawke since at least 2021 — which is a detail worth holding onto, because it explains quite a lot about what followed and what didn't.
The ceremony was at St George's Episcopal Church on Stuyvesant Square in Manhattan, early on the afternoon of 14 February. Snow on the ground. Paparazzi outside. A reception afterwards at The Players, the private members' club on Gramercy Park South, where photographs are not permitted indoors.
Nobody posted anything. Not Hawke, not Hutson, not Thurman, not any of the sevenStranger Thingscast members who turned up.Peoplemagazine broke the story with paparazzi shots: the couple walking hand in hand through slush, her in a sleeveless white gown with a feathery winter coat, him in a black-and-white tuxedo looking like he couldn't quite believe the cold.
Start with the parents. Uma Thurman wore baby blue, floor-length, matching shoes. Ethan Hawke turned up in all black and was photographed outside the church clutching his daughter's bouquet, which is the kind of image that doesn't need a caption. They were married from 1998 to 2005; both are 55 now. Maya's brother Levon Roan Thurman-Hawke was there too.
Then the Stranger Things lot arrived. Finn Wolfhard. Joe Keery. Gaten Matarazzo. Caleb McLaughlin. Sadie Sink. Natalia Dyer. Charlie Heaton. All spotted walking Manhattan streets together after the service. Kathryn Newton and Iris Apatow rounded things out, alongside Sam Nivola.
Here is where most of the coverage fell short — or rather, it didn't fall short so much as miss the point entirely. Several outlets framed the wedding through a net-worth comparison — Hawke's estimated $4m versus Hutson's reported $2–4m — as though that were the story. It isn't. These two have been making music together for the better part of five years, and the marriage looks less like a sudden romantic decision than the inevitable end point of a creative partnership that kept getting deeper.
Hutson wrote on Hawke's second album, Moss, back in 2022. She'd sent him poems; he sent back what she called 'unbelievable songs'. That was before anyone knew they were together. By 2024 he was producing her third record, Chaos Angel, and she was singing on his Paradise Pop. 10 (co-produced by Phoebe Bridgers). They performed together at Carnegie Hall that February. He posted a Valentine's Day photo of the two of them on a couch. The penny dropped for most of the internet around December 2023, when they were photographed kissing in New York, but the working relationship had been running for years by then.
Red carpet debut: April 2025, opening night of Sadie Sink's Broadway play John Proctor Is the Villain. A week later Hawke was spotted wearing what looked like a diamond ring. Hutson confirmed the engagement on a SoCal Sound Session — the host mentioned his 'fiancée Maya' and he just said 'yeah'.
Born in Kansas City. Moved to California at five. Played in a band called the Driftwood Singers, put out two solo records nobody much noticed, then met Bridgers in 2018 and everything changed. She produced Beginners (2020), Quitters (2022) and Paradise Pop. 10 (2024). He opened for her on tour across 2022 and 2023.
He was previously married to singer Sharon Silva. When that ended isn't public.
