Within a span of one week, two women from Noida and Bhopal died in separate cases where their families have alleged dowry harassment and abuse by in-laws. In Noida, Twisha Sharma from Noida was found dead in Bhopal, with reports of multiple antemortem injuries raising serious questions. While in Greater Noida, Deepika died after falling from a terrace, with her family alleging harassment over dowry demands, including a Fortuner car. Though the circumstances differ, both cases have drawn attention to continuing allegations of abuse within marital homes and the persistent reality of dowry-related violence.
31-year-oldTwisha Sharma, originally from Noida, was found hanging at her matrimonial home in Bhopal's Katara Hills area earlier this week. She married Bhopal-based advocate Samarth Singh in December 2025 after meeting him through a dating application in 2024.
Police said she was rushed to the hospital by her husband and mother-in-law, where doctors declared her dead. The victim's family alleged Twisha was subjected to mental harassment, domestic violence, and pressure over dowry after marriage. Her brother, Major Harshit Sharma, claimed she had spoken to her mother shortly before her death and described harassment at her matrimonial home.
The family also alleged that she was pressured to terminate her pregnancy and transfer shares and investments worth nearly Rs 20 lakh to her husband and in-laws.
According to the postmortem report, the cause of death was listed as “antemortem hanging by ligature”. The report also noted “multiple antemortem injuries” on different parts of her body.
Police said viscera, blood samples, and nail samples have been preserved for forensic and DNA examination, while clothes and other materials from the scene have also been seized for analysis.
In the same week, another horrific dowry-related suicide case unfolded, when 24-year-oldDeepika allegedly died by suicideafter jumping from the roof of her house in Greater Noida's Ecotech-III area. The couple got married around 18-months-ago.
Her family alleged that she was beaten and then thrown from the terrace to make it look like an accident. Moreover, they have also accused her husband and in-laws of harassment and torture. According to a TOI report, Deepika’s uncle Vishesh Nagar alleged that there were multiple marks of physical assault on her body and a deep wound that could have been caused by a sharp object such as a blade or screwdriver.
"We never imagined that all this would happen. Yesterday, my elder brother went to their house. As soon as he returned home—half an hour later—he received a phone call informing him that she had fallen. My brother even asked where she had fallen—that is, whether she had fallen down the stairs," he added.
In a press conference, Deepika's mother-in-law Giribala Singh claimed that Twisha had been undergoing psychiatric counselling and was prescribed medicines "given to a schizophrenic patient".
