What begins each September inside a district warehouse quietly grows into one ofRoslyn High School’s most cherished traditions: the annual Senior Party, a parent-led celebration that transforms the school gym into an immersive experience designed exclusively for graduating seniors.
For months, parent volunteers work behind the scenes painting, building and organizing the elaborate event, all while keeping the year’s theme a closely guarded secret until the night of the celebration.
“This is so much more than just the event itself,” said Hailey Goodman, a member of the Senior Party art committee and one of the lead artists behind this year’s production. “It really brings together community.”
The tradition dates back to the late 1960s, when Roslyn High School seniors chose not to hold a traditional prom during the Vietnam War era, feeling it did not reflect the mood of the time. In response, parents organized an alternative celebration to honor graduating students, creating what would become known as the “Senior Party.”
Today, the event remains entirely volunteer-driven.
Parents divide into committees handling everything from artwork and decorations to invitations, food coordination and gifts for seniors. Local restaurants donate food for the evening, while district maintenance and custodial staff help transform the gym.
The art committee creates approximately 60 large-scale painted boards that line the perimeter of the gym. Each section represents a school within the Roslyn district, tracing the students’ journey from the Heights School through Roslyn High School.
“We brainstorm together as a group and create different scenes for the theme,” Goodman said. “It starts as just an idea, and then once it’s all built in the gym, the vision just comes to life.”
Goodman, a Roslyn High School graduate and former AP Art student, first became involved during her son’s senior year. She returned this year for her daughter’s graduating class.
The experience, she said, has come full circle.
