Islamabad:Amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia, Pakistan on Monday shared with theUnited Statesa revised peace proposal with Iran to end hostilities between the two nations, reported global news agency Reuters, citing sources. Notably, the peace talks between the US and Iran remained stalled over Tehran's refusing to accept certain demands by Washington, including stopping uranium enrichment.
"We don't have much time," the source said, as quoted by Reuters. It further added that both parties are keep changing their goalposts."
Trump's 'Clock Is Ticking' Warning To Iran:
The development came hours after US President Donald Trump's "clock is ticking" warning to Iran. Trump said that Iran should act fast. Trump, who recently returned from China, where he had held discussions with counterpart Xi Jinping on Iran and Taiwan among a host of other issues, took to Truth Social and posted, "For Iran, the Clock is Ticking, and they better get moving, FAST, or there won’t be anything left of them. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE!"
Earlier, theUS Presidentheld a crucial phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump had briefed Netanyahu about his recent visit to China and also on exploring strategies viz-a-viz Iran, amid fears of resuming US strikes.
The latest standoff comes months after US and Israeli forces launched major strikes on Iran beginning February 28, triggering a regional conflict that disrupted global energy markets and sharply escalated tensions across the Middle East. Although a ceasefire mediated by Pakistan took effect on April 8, talks between Iranian and American delegations have failed to secure a long-term agreement.
According to Iran’s Tasnim and Fars news agencies, Tehran’s proposal included an immediate end to fighting on all fronts, including Israeli attacks linked to Hezbollah in Lebanon; lifting the US naval blockade of Iranian ports; release of frozen Iranian assets, compensation for war damage, and “recognition of Iran’s sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz.”
Iran has continued to control the strategic waterway, through which nearly 20 per cent of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas passes, sending global oil prices soaring.
Washington, meanwhile, has reportedly set five conditions for continuing the ceasefire process. Iranian media claimed the US demanded that Iran keep only one nuclear facility operational and transfer nearly 400 kilograms of enriched uranium to the US. Reports also said Washington refused Tehran’s demand for compensation over damage caused by US strikes.
Trump appeared to soften one position earlier this week by indicating he may accept a 20-year suspension of Iran’s nuclear programme instead of insisting on its total dismantling.
