A gruesome discovery on the Gomtinagar Express triggered panic in Lucknow on Sunday after the headless body of a young woman was found packed inside a box in a sleeper coach of the train arriving from Chhapra in Bihar. The body was recovered from coach S-1 of train number 15114 at Gomtinagar Railway Station.
According to officials, the train departed from Chhapra at 5:45 PM on May 16 and reached Gomtinagar at around 6 AM on Sunday. During routine cleaning of the sleeper coach, railway staff noticed a suspicious box and a sack lying nearby. They immediately informed the station superintendent, following which teams from the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) reached the spot.
GRP in-charge of Charbagh, Dharamveer Singh, said that upon reaching the spot with the team, the box was opened. Inside, police found the torso of a woman believed to be around 30 to 35 years old. Her hands and feet were packed separately in a polythene bag, while her head was missing.
Officials also noted that the body had been packed carefully to prevent blood from leaking outside the box and bag. No external bloodstains were visible, and no marks of struggle or other injuries were immediately found on the body. The remains have been sent for post-mortem examination.
Investigators are also expected to question passengers who travelled in the S-1 coach and scrutinise reservation records to identify anyone seen carrying large boxes or suspicious luggage during the 12-hour journey. The woman’s identity remains unknown, and the search for her missing head is still underway.
