For years, kidney stones were viewed mainly as a painful urinary condition caused by mineral buildup in the kidneys. But emerging research is now revealing a surprising connection between recurrent kidney stones and another major men’s health issue - erectile dysfunction.
According to Dr. Sanjay Prakash J, Consultant Urologist, Microsurgical Andrologist, and Men’s Health Expert at the Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology, recurrent kidney stones may be more than just a urological problem. In many men, it could be an early warning sign of underlying vascular and metabolic disorders that also affect sexual health. "Men with recurrent kidney stones have a significantly higher prevalence of erectile dysfunction compared to men without stones. Some reports suggest that nearly one in three men with chronic stone disease may experience varying degrees of ED. More importantly, younger men with recurrent stones appear particularly vulnerable," he said.

At first glance, the connection seems unlikely. Kidney stones cause severe flank pain, urinary discomfort, and nausea, while erectile dysfunction affects blood flow and sexual performance. However, studies otherwise. Experts say younger men with repeated stone episodes appear particularly vulnerable.
Doctors now believe the link may lie in blood vessel health. Modern medicine increasingly recognizes kidney stone disease as a metabolic and vascular disorder rather than simply a “calcium problem.” Conditions like diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, smoking, poor sleep, high cholesterol and chronic inflammation can contribute to both kidney stone formation and erectile dysfunction simultaneously. "The connection may lie in the blood vessels. Modern medicine no longer views kidney stones as simply a “calcium problem.” Increasingly, stone disease is considered a metabolic and vascular disorder. Conditions such as diabetes, obesity, hypertension, smoking, poor sleep, dyslipidemia, and chronic inflammation contribute to both kidney stone formation and erectile dysfunction simultaneously," said Dr. Sanjay.
The key factor is believed to be Endothelial Dysfunction - damage to the inner lining of blood vessels.
Healthy erections depend on proper blood flow to the penis. When blood vessels become inflamed, narrowed, or damaged, blood circulation is impaired, increasing the risk of erectile dysfunction. According to Dr. Prakash, the same vascular abnormalities may also affect kidney function, calcium regulation, urinary chemistry, and inflammatory pathways that promote stone formation.
Kidney stones can be extremely painful
Researchers have also observed lower testosterone levels in some men suffering from recurrent kidney stones.
In addition, chronic pain, sleep disturbances, anxiety about stone recurrence, repeated hospital visits, and reduced quality of life may negatively affect sexual confidence and performance. Doctors warn that these physical and emotional stressors can create a cycle where metabolic health, hormonal balance, and sexual well-being all become interconnected.
