As artificial intelligence becomes a part of our lives, the world has divided itself into two parts. On one side, a group wants AI to be used in every aspect. On the contrary, the other group is worried about its impact on jobs, healthcare and economy. While big tech companies continue to invest heavily in AI, students are worried about loss of entry-level jobs. At a recent graduation ceremony at the University of Arizona, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt faced repeated boos from students every time he mentioned AI in his speech.

Several videos have gone viral on social media platforms where students reacted negatively toSchmidtwhenever he spoke of AI. He was invited to deliver the commencement speech at the university’s graduation ceremony last Friday.

In one of the moments during his speech, the former Google executive told graduates, “The question is whether you will help shape artificial intelligence.” However, he immediately faced the backlash in the form of loud boos from students. While he tried to continue with his speech, Schmidt responded, “If you'd let me make this point, please.” But the interruptions reportedly continued, and he stopped a couple of times during the address.

At one point, he turned away from the audience and waited silently, continuing the speech.

The reaction from students shows how concerns related to AI are rising among young people about the impact of AI on their careers. Many fear AI tools can simply reduce the entry-level jobs in industries ranging from customer support to technology.

Notably, Schmidt also acknowledged the fear of students. He said, “I can hear you. There is fear.” He added that such fears were understandable and encouraged students to participate in how the industry can be reshaped rather than avoiding it totally. Moreover, he tried motivating the students bycomparing AIto big opportunities. He said that when someone offers a seat on the rocket ship, people must not ask which seat, and the rocket ship is here.

This incident shows how tech leaders and young generations trying to enter the workforce have different takes on AI. While big tech companies see AI as the next major revolution, students are raising questions about whether the tech will generate opportunities or make their future uncertain.
