As the fragile US-Iran ceasefire teeters, US President Donald Trump has issued a fresh warning to Tehran, saying it must move quickly toward a deal or face consequences. “For Iran, the Clock is ticking, and they better get moving, FAST, or there won't be anything left of them,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. “TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE!”

The warning came after Trump held talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu amid growing concerns that negotiations to end the war in West Asia have stalled. Iranian media, however, claimed Washington had failed to offer any meaningful concessions in response to Tehran’s latest peace proposals. Iran’s semi-official Mehr news agency warned that the lack of compromise could lead to an “impasse in the negotiations”.

The latest standoff comes months after US and Israeli forces launched major strikes on Iran beginning February 28, triggering a regional conflict that disrupted global energy markets and sharply escalated tensions across the Middle East.

Although a ceasefire mediated by Pakistan took effect on April 8, talks between Iranian and American delegations have failed to secure a long-term agreement.

According to Iran’s Tasnim and Fars news agencies, Tehran’s proposal included an immediate end to fighting on all fronts, including Israeli attacks linked to Hezbollah in Lebanon, lifting the US naval blockade of Iranian ports, release of frozen Iranian assets, compensation for war damage, and “recognition of Iran’s sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz.”

Iran has continued to control the strategic waterway, through which nearly 20 per cent of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas passes, sending global oil prices soaring.

Washington, meanwhile, has reportedly set five conditions for continuing the ceasefire process. Iranian media claimed the US demanded that Iran keep only one nuclear facility operational and transfer nearly 400 kilograms of enriched uranium to the US. Reports also said Washington refused Tehran’s demand for compensation over damage caused by US strikes.

Trump appeared to soften one position earlier this week by indicating he may accept a 20-year suspension of Iran’s nuclear programme instead of insisting on its total dismantling.

Even as diplomacy struggles, Trump has intensified his rhetoric online. In a late-night spree on Truth Social, he shared AI-generated images showing missile strikes on Iranian boats, warships attacking aircraft, outer space warfare scenes, and an American flag superimposed over Iran, perhaps an indication that the confrontation is far from over.
