Fresh controversy has emerged in the death case of31-year-old Twisha Sharmain Bhopal after investigators acknowledged a procedural lapse during her postmortem examination. The family of the Sharma staged a protest outside the residence of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Sunday, alleging murder, destruction of evidence, and influence in the investigation. The family refused to perform her last rites and demanded a fresh post-mortem examination at AIIMS Delhi. They alleged that the initial probe and post-mortem conducted in Bhopal were unsatisfactory and biased.
According to the family, Twisha’s body had injury marks on her hands and ears. The family also claimed the hanging mark on her neck was not the typical “V-shape” generally associated with suicide cases. They also alleged that there were no visible signs of struggle at the scene and suspected that the body may have been washed before police arrived. Citing these alleged inconsistencies, relatives said they believe Twisha’s death was a “well-planned murder” and not a case of suicide.
The family also demanded that the body be preserved properly for a second post-mortem. The family has alleged that the investigation is being influenced by powerful connections of the accused, while also accusing police of delaying the FIR and initially refusing to include murder charges in the case.
According to officials, police are required to submit the ligature material along with the body so that forensic experts can compare the neck injury marks with the object allegedly used in the hanging. However, Twisha’s postmortem examination was conducted, and the report was issued without this comparison being carried out.
Authorities have now attempted to rectify the lapse. The ligature material was handed over to AIIMS Bhopal on Sunday, and doctors are expected to conduct a fresh examination to determine whether the neck marks match the material allegedly used for hanging.
Police said she was rushed to the hospital by her husband and mother-in-law, where doctors declared her dead. No suicide note was recovered from the scene.
Sharma, a former Miss Pune 2012, Telugu film actress and model associated with brands such as Dove and L’Oreal, had allegedly been facing sustained harassment and abuse after her marriage, according to her family. Twisha was allegedly subjected to dowry-related pressure from the beginning of the marriage. Her father, Navnidhi Sharma, claimed that during the wedding ceremony, the groom’s family allegedly threatened to halt the procession unless a “compromise deal” involving money was reached.
He further alleged that physical abuse began during the couple’s honeymoon, claiming Samarth pushed Twisha following an argument over a flight delay. He also accused his son-in-law of drug abuse and claimed he had previously been removed from law college over alleged substance use. Twisha’s family said she was subjected to continuous mental harassment and was repeatedly made to feel “useless” and “incompetent”.
The family alleged Twisha was subjected to mental harassment, domestic violence, and pressure over dowry after marriage. Her brother, Major Harshit Sharma, claimed she had spoken to her mother shortly before her death and described harassment at her matrimonial home.
