ChatGPT and Gemini rival, Sarvam AI has introduced a new on-device AI model called Sarvam Edge which designed to run directly on smartphones and laptops without needing an internet connection. The company says the model focuses on speed, privacy and reliability, while also supporting major Indian languages.

According to reports, Sarvam Edge can handle everyday AI tasks. These tasks include speech recognition, translation and text-to-speech. The model is designed with strong support for multiple Indian languages and can automatically identify the language a person is speaking.

Because of this, users can simply speak naturally instead of choosing a language every time they interact with the tool. Its text-to-speech capability also works across the same language set that could make it useful for voice assistants.

The translation system in Sarvam Edge supports 11 languages, including English.

The AI model enables two-way translation across more than 100 language combinations. As per reports, all of this works offline, which can be especially helpful in areas where internet connectivity is weak or unstable. Since data is processed on the device itself, user information does not need to be sent to the cloud, which improves privacy and reduces delays.

Sarvam AIsays the model is optimised for modern smartphones and laptops and does not require special hardware. The Sarvam Edge is developed to run efficiently on existing processors with low memory usage and fast response times.

Real-time transcription can process speech faster than live audio, while translation responses are almost instant. This makes the system suitable for real-time conversations, voice typing and assistive tools.

It can be used to build voice-first apps, offline translation tools, accessibility features and smart devices that work even with no internet. Sarvam Edge can be helpful for sectors like education, finance and public services. With this new AI model, the Bengaluru-based startup is betting big on on-device intelligence.
