Legendary Indian batter Virat Kohli has stated that he would like to compete in the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, but only if all goes according to plan. Currently, the veteran star only participates in ODIs and theIPLafter retiring from T20Is and Tests. This raised many questions about his future in the game and, moreover, about his participation in the upcoming ODI World Cup, to be held in South Africa in 2027. However, Kohli answered all those questions and silenced his critics with his bat, scoring heavily in ODIs last year after returning from a six-month hiatus, scoring three hundreds and three fifties in seven matches.
At this point in his career, Kohli is only participating in the sport purely for the love of it. Throughout his illustrious career, he has won two ICC Champions Trophies, a 50-overs World Cup, a T20 World Cup, and the Indian Premier League (IPL) with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). With more than a year until the 50-over World Cup starts, he would like to evaluate a few things, especially the current atmosphere, and pointed out that he would not be in the ideal position if he was required to continuously prove himself.
Despite his absence from the two big formats of the game, he rarely appears rusty, having just scored a century against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Wednesday in the IPL.
“As for all the 2027 World Cup talk, honestly, we are still in mid-2026. I have been asked many times, ‘Do you want to play in 2027?’ Why would I leave my home, bring all my stuff here, and not want to play? Of course, if I am playing, I want to play for India. I want to be part of a World Cup. But the value has to be clear. My perspective is that if I can add value to the environment, I am part of, and the environment feels I can add value, I will be seen," Kohli said in the recent RCB podcast.
"But if I am made to feel like I need to constantly prove my worth and value, then I am not in that space, because I am honest about my preparation and my approach to the game. I put my head down. I work hard. I am very thankful to God for everything I have been given in my cricketing career, and I feel blessed and grateful for the opportunities I have had," he added.
