Temple Beth-El of Great Neck and the Great Neck Chinese Association are joining forces for a combined Memorial Day barbecue to commemorate Jewish Heritage and Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Months in TBE’s Rudin Garden on Monday, May 25, at 5 p.m.
In an effort to foster deep connections between Great Neck’s Jewish and AAPI communities, TBE and GNCA are partnering to re-envision a traditional Memorial Day celebration as a cross-cultural community event.
“Leadership from both organizations, who have a history of service to Great Neck, will co-create a program that celebrates diverse backgrounds and a shared American identity,” explained TBE’s Executive Director Stuart Botwinick. “Temple Beth-El’s annual Memorial Day barbecue will be reimagined to include Jewish and Chinese ethnic cuisines alongside traditional American fare.”
The event will also feature music and joint speeches from community leaders. To further bridge communities, attendees will participate in facilitated “table talks” using curated conversation starters.
“The primary goal is to move beyond parallel play and into active partnership, encouraging members of both communities to form new friendships,” Botwinick continued. “By highlighting the contributions of Jewish and AAPI Americans during their respective heritage months, we aim to build a more cohesive and inclusive local culture.”
Marchers are invited to enjoy a Brotherhood-provided breakfast before the parade or to meet at 9 a.m. to march. To participate, [email protected].
The entire community is invited to join TBE and GNCA at the UJA Federation of NY–funded event for American barbecue favorites, including kosher hamburgers and hot dogs, vegetarian burgers, side dishes, as well as sushi and dumplings. Watermelon, dessert and beverages will also be served.
Admission costs $18 for adults, $10 for TBE and GNCA members, and is free for children younger than 18. Register attinyurl.com/TBEMay25.Temple Beth-El has been serving the community for nearly a century at 5 Old Mill Road. Learn more atwww.tbegreatneck.org, 516-487-0900 [email protected].
