New Delhi:Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Friday made strong remarks in court, saying that some unemployed youngsters “become” media persons, social media users and RTI activists, and then start attacking the system. The comments came during a hearing where a bench of CJI Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi was criticising a lawyer for actively seeking senior advocate status.
The bench told the lawyer, “The entire world may be eligible to become senior (advocate), but at least you are not entitled.”
The CJI said that if the Delhi High Court gave the lawyer senior advocate status, the Supreme Court could cancel it after looking at his professional behaviour.
The court also referred to comments allegedly made by the lawyer on Facebook.
“There are already parasites of society who attack the system and you want to join hands with them?” the CJI said.
“There are youngsters like cockroaches, who don't get any employment or have any place in profession. Some of them become media, some of them become social media, RTI activists and other activists and they start attacking everyone,” he added.
The bench also asked the lawyer whether he had any other cases pending and questioned whether his behaviour was suitable for someone seeking senior advocate designation.
The court said senior advocate status is an honour given by the court and should not be chased by lawyers.
“You are pursuing it. Does it look proper?” the bench asked, adding that senior advocate designation should not be treated as a status symbol.
The CJI also said the court sometimes feels that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) should verify the degrees of some lawyers because there are doubts about whether their qualifications are genuine.
